Jane M.

From Sr. Manager Marketing @ Retail to Marketing Sr. Lead @ Series-D Retail Start-up

UVA Darden 2020

When Jane and I started working together, she was ready to launch her career forward. She was a high-performer marketer at a company she enjoyed, but market changes had stalled her growth and created an uncertain environment.

Jane loved marketing and wanted to continue advancing, but didn’t know where and how.

Before recruiting, she wanted to get clear on her long-term aspiration so she could ensure her next role built towards it.

We defined the pillars Jane wanted to build her career around: working for consumer-obsessed evergreen brands; managing across different marketing channels; and leading increasingly larger teams.

Using visualization, we created a 7-year goal (or in 2-3 roles) for Jane to be a senior marketing leader at a medium-sized company with a strong brand and consumer-focus, where she could influence the broader business strategy and lead multiple marketing channels and teams. This role will position her to be a Chief Marketing Officer.

Armed with that clarity, Jane needed a near-term role that would give her experience in different marketing channels and significant strategy and people management responsibilities, likely at a start-up or high-growth company.

Jane is now the Sr. Lead of Integrated Marketing for a Series-D home design start-up, where she is responsible for creating the integrated marketing strategy for their new B2C product line.

In Jane’s words:

Working with Cydnee gave me clarity and confidence, turning a process that initially felt overwhelming into one that felt empowering, educational and fun. In our early conversations, she listened and asked questions that allowed her to truly understand me, quickly honing in on my superpower and what gives me energy. With this, we developed operating principles together that not only acted as a framework for my job search, but have become a tool I use in regular decision-making.

One of the best things about working with Cydnee is that she understood what I uniquely needed to feel supported. It was important for me to work with a coach who was a positive cheerleader, and at the same time held me accountable and empowered me to make tough decisions. With Cydnee's support, I felt comfortable saying "no" to opportunities that seemed good, but weren't quite right, and am now in a dream job, where I feel energized and excited about where I am headed.
